日本人ダイバーからも非常に人気の高いマリアナ(サイパン・ロタ・テニアン)。今回は来日された北マリアナ諸島自治区連邦区知事アーノルド・パラシオス氏とマリアナ政府観光局局長クリストファー・A・コンセプション氏にマリアナの魅力や日本人ダイバーへのメッセージを『マリンダイビングWeb』がインタビューしました。
The Marianas (Saipan, Rota and Tinian) are very popular among Japanese divers. Marine Diving Web interviewed Mr. Arnold Palacios, Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Mr. Christopher A. Concepcion, Managing Director of the Marianas Visitors Authority, who were in Japan for this interview, to learn more about Mariana’s attractions and their message to Japanese divers.

知事　　ありがとうございます。日本人ダイバーの方の投票で決まったことがとても嬉しいです。これも日本人ダイバーの方がマリアナの海のよさをよく知っていて、以前からたくさんの方が訪れて応援してくださるからだと思っています。
Governor 　　Thank you very much. I am very happy that the Japanese divers voted for this award. I believe this is because Japanese divers are well aware of the quality of the Mariana Sea, and many of them have been visiting and supporting us for a long time.

Now, please tell us what divers are most interested in about the Mariana Sea.

知事　　　マリアナ諸島には、世界でも有数のダイビングの魅力があります。サイパンは、広大なサンゴ礁、ウミガメ、マダラトビエイ、イルカ、サメ、第2次世界大戦時の沈没船、世界有数の洞窟「グロット」など、ダイバーにとって夢のような場所です。 テニアン島はマリアナ諸島で2番目に大きな島で、抜群の水中透視度、海底にドロップオフするユニークな岩の造形、豊富な海洋生物で知られています。ロタ島はマリアナ諸島で3番目に大きな島で、サイパンやテニアンの透視度の高さに比べても、透視度が高いことで知られています。 海に入ると、”ロタブルー “と呼ばれる独特の澄んだ青い海が迎えてくれます。 ロタホール、コーラルガーデン、シャークポイントはロタで必見のダイビングスポットのほんの一部で、その他魅力的なポイントがたくさんあります。
Governor　 　The Mariana Islands offer some of the best diving in the world. Saipan is a diver’s dream with its vast coral reefs, sea turtles, eagle rays, dolphins, sharks, World War II shipwrecks, and world-class caves called grottos. Tinian is the second largest island in the Marianas and is known for its outstanding underwater visibility, unique rock formations that drop off to the ocean floor, and abundant marine life. Rota is the third largest island in the Marianas and is known for its excellent underwater visibility compared to the high visibility of Saipan and Tinian. Upon entering the ocean, visitors are greeted by the unique clear blue waters known as “Rota Blue.” Rota Hole, Coral Garden, and Shark Point are just a few of Rota’s must-see dive sites, and there are many other fascinating points of interest.

Do you have any promotional plans for Japan in 2024?

局長　　マリアナ政府観光局では、日本の方々にマリアナ諸島を一流のダイビング・デスティネーションと知ってもらうためPRの一環として、数十年にわたり東京で開催されている「マリンダイビングフェア」に参加させていただいています。なお、現状実施しているソーシャルメディアキャンペーンを継続する意向です。マラソンなど他のスポーツと同様に現地でダイバー向けのイベントなども考えていけるとよいと思っています。また、東京で毎年開催されるマリンダイビングフェアには2025年も出展予定です。
Managing Director　　The Marianas Visitors Authority is pleased to participate in the Marine Diving Fair, which has been held in Tokyo for several decades as part of our PR efforts to promote the Marianas Islands as a premier diving destination to the Japanese public. We intend to continue our current social media campaign. We hope to consider holding local events for divers as we do for other sports, such as marathons. We also plan to participate in the annual Marine Diving Fair held in Tokyo in 2025.

Managing Director　　Through our many conservation efforts, we have been successful in protecting our reefs and increasing the variety of marine life. As a result, the waters of the Mariana Islands are the most transparent in the world and have come to be known as “Mariana blue.” In addition, Japanese divers benefit from the fact that it is only a three-hour flight away, and there is no off-season because of the year-round warm climate. In addition, United Airlines is running a campaign in May and June, so please take advantage of it and come to Mariana. First time visitors and repeaters alike will love it. We look forward to welcoming you to Mariana with our hospitality. We wish you a very happy “Hafa Adai! (Hello!)”
